Accent lighting can compliment every room in your home with that extra touch of sparkle. It provides interest and gives the room character. Accent lighting, as the name implies is lighting that gives emphasis and prominence to a certain area or can highlight a specific object. Accent lighting should be thought of as less is more and should be done sparingly.
When used in conjunction with ambient lighting, which usually flattens the space, accent lighting gives the room back its third dimension feel. Like a good piece of artwork, there is a focal point that pulls the eye toward the center. In a living room for example, a center object such as a photo hung above a fire place or even the fire place itself can become the focal point of the room when it is well lit with accent lighting.
Accent lighting can be recessed into the ceiling. Movable recessed lights offer the space the best light. They also provide good lighting for an art piece. The recessed light should be positioned at a 30 degree angle to prevent glare on glass covered artwork. In a dining room, a recessed light aimed at the table and one on the chandelier will really make the room look amazing. The accent light will highlight the table settings and will enhance the beautiful chandelier making it sparkle even more. Recessed lighting can also highlight a single wall, maybe one with nothing on it, perhaps one that is an interesting color. This is called white washing and is effective for giving the space depth.
Accent lighting can also be mounted on the wall. Scones or wall bracket fixtures can be installed on either side of windows, book shelves, china cabinets, the fire place, and door ways.
Halogen bulbs are often used for accent lighting because they offer a truer white light than incandescent bulbs. Halogen bulbs are popular for accent lighting collectibles, china, and glassware.
Low voltage strip lighting creates drama and interest when used along shelves, bookcases, window sills, and above door ways,.
Any room that has a strong architectural feature can be accented. Recessed lighting can be used, as well as other lights. For example, a small lamp near the doorway will accent the angles. A low voltage spot light hidden behind a floor plant in the corner can create interesting shadows while highlighting the angles. Spot lighting a rounded wall or the crown molding of a room will emphasize the room's uniqueness.
A wonderful aspect of accent lighting is it creates a mood—an ambiance if you will. Low lighting along with a few candles and you are all set for some quiet, alone time. Accent lighting is a matter of personal taste. The ideas generated will hopefully inspire you to pick up a few low voltage lamps and strip lighting. Experiment with accent lighting to see what works best for your space.
