Bathroom Lighting Fixtures, And Ideas

Few things can affect one's mood for the day like their image in the bathroom mirror in the morning. How bathroom lighting fixtures are used can make all the difference between a beautiful, confident day and a terrifying sight that will get the day started on the completely wrong foot. There are a variety of bathroom lighting ideas that can accent the home and improve a person's day.

There are three basic types of bathroom lighting fixtures: general illumination, task lighting, and accent lighting. General illumination is generally ceiling lighting designed to illuminate the entire room. Task lighting, such bathroom vanity lighting, can be found around the mirror and is there to show bright small detail for putting on makeup or removing unsightly facial hair. Accent lighting is usually low-wattage fixtures added along the walls for decoration and ambiance.

The types of bathroom lighting fixtures available range from simple two or three bulb fixtures in the center of the ceiling to multi-light chandeliers with a ceiling fans. For making the decision of what kind of bathroom lighting fixtures to use one should consider the size of the room and the height of the ceiling. Factoring in the colors in the bathroom and the number of hidden spaces, it might be useful to have two or more bathroom lighting fixtures.

Task lighting, or bathroom vanity lighting, in its most mundane form is a strip of exposed bulbs above and around a vanity mirror. The purpose of these bathroom lighting fixtures is to illuminate the user with few or no shadows. While most smaller bathrooms will only have a strip above the vanity mirror, side-light bathroom lighting fixtures can add more complete coverage to the occupant. Some of the great styles of European bathroom lighting use this style to great affect. Recessed lighting should never be used for task lighting, as its highly directed light causes severe shadows and will create extremely unflattering lines on the occupant.

It's very important to note that the type of light bulb used in bathroom lighting fixtures can make a great deal of difference. Choosing true color lights to make sure that coloring in the room is pure and clean. Newer types of bulbs including compact fluorescent bulbs can make bathroom lighting fixtures both efficient and effective.

Ambiance or accent lighting are almost purely decorative bathroom lighting fixtures. In a large bathroom, sconce lights or low-wattage recessed lighting can offset the harshness of the bathroom vanity lighting. The softness of accent bathroom lighting fixtures creates a feeling almost like a fireplace light making the bathroom comfortable and homey. Accent lighting, many inspired by European bathroom lighting, is one the classic ways to light a bathroom. A sculpted metal tree branch or a minimalist glass sconce are only a couple of examples of bathroom lighting fixtures that can create a classic room.

Other possible bathroom lighting ideas include track lighting and linear lighting. Track lighting is a series of tiny spot lights on the ceiling or walls. It is designed to add depth and character to the room. Highlighting a beautiful vanity or dressing table with track lights can create a magazine cover worthy space. Linear lighting systems, similar to floor lights in a theater, can add a night-light feature to a bathroom without detracting from the beauty of the space when it is fully lit.

Great bathroom lighting fixtures can enhance the value of a home and make each morning seem that much brighter. Remember that there are only a few rules for lighting, so taking great bathroom lighting ideas and turning them into reality with quality bathroom lighting fixtures can create the perfect space in the home.
